The Good Life
This is a great spot where we lived just north of Cabo San Lucas on the Pacific Coast. The fishing was sketchy due to the big surf and onshore winds that blew every day. However, we saw many marlin and sailfish jumping from our porch. We also saw a big hammer head shark swim by right in front of the rocks where I liked to snorkel when the surf wasn't too rough!!! Turtles nested on the beach here and obviously the dog liked the place.

Hurricane Norbert

Here we go again! This one looks like it could get big. Currently a category 3 hurricane, Norbert is predicted to build to a category 4 and then weaken before making landfall. The predicted path has been steady for the last few days. Everyone between Abreojos/Mulege and Cabo San Lucas should monitor the situation and get ready. I'm adding a link to the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration's Hurricane Preparedness web page to my link list.

Minerva Smith and the Shark Norma
I first ran across Minerva's shop about a number of years ago after breaking my only saltwater flyrod on my first day of a baja trip. I'll save the story for another day but the short version is that I got tossed in the beach break at La Playita just east of San Jose Del Cabo. It was basically impossible to find fly gear in Baja back then. The next day we were headed to La Paz. Someone, I don't remember who, suggested Minerva's shop in Cabo San Lucas. So we took the western route to La Paz and stopped in. To my relief leaning in the corner with a more than fair price was a G-Loomis 10-weight. I still have that rod and fish with it regularly.
But.... the reason I was rambling about Minerva was that I wanted to post a link to this Baja Road Trekker column and her fight against the Shark Norma.

The Economic Value of Sport Fishing
Tropical Storm Lowell has decayed into a troical depression, turned east and is now headed towards La Paz. It should provide some rain and not much else.
I just found this great study organized by the Bill Fish Foundation:
Socio-Economic Study Completed in Mexico: Sportfishing Brings in Big Bucks
The full report is available at:
The Economic Contributions of Anglers to the Los Cabos Economy

Tropical Storm Julio

This map from the US National Hurricane Center's web page for Tropical Storm Julio just about says it all. The Mexican government has issued a tropical storm warning from Cabo San Lucas north to Abreojos and Mulege. If you are down south expect lots of rain and wind. Stay out of the arroyos - flash flooding will be a problem.
Here's a link to El Sud Californiano's coverage of Tormenta Tropical Julio for you Spanish readers.
